Delicatessen Movie Review

If you were living in a post apocalyptic city and you were trying to keep your tenants alive and fed what would you do? You're a butcher you have the skills to slice and dice. Would you entice men to live there with cheap rent and the promise of a job as a maintenance man? Only to murder them a week later...after they fix the leaky pipes?

In this case that's what happens in Delicatessen. Louison, played by Dominique Pinon (Amelie, The City of Lost Children) is that new tenant. Louison and the butcher's daughter fall in love and she is forced to decide whether or not to go against her father or take a chance with this saw playing weirdo.

Each scene is as eclectic as the next and I can't help but feel as if I have been selected to star in my favorite vintage thrift shop with every passing moment. There is even a full blown sex scene starring rug smacking, clock ticking, metal clanging, water boiling love. I implore you to find this combined elsewhere.

If you are not into foreign films and subtitles this is the movie for you. Ha. The dialogue is sparse and the cinematography is incredible. The French have this way of highlighting architecture and scenes so that you feel as if you are walking in the halls and looking into the rooms. The 2nd picture is a poorly contrived suicide, we have to credit the dark humor right?

You can rent or buy it off Amazon here and of course there's reviews to ponder over as well. Whenever I watch artistic movies like that I find myself more inspired for the upcoming days. What movies have you inspired right now ?

Harry Potter Fetish

link
I will be the first person to admit that I love Harry Potter. This is not a typical post for me.... but for some reason I feel like talking about it. I began watching Harry Potter when the first movie came out in 2001. My brother is 5 years younger than I am and has been reading the phenomenon since the start. I was lucky enough to tag along for the ride.  I remember when each book came out, and he would do everything in his power to be the first to buy it, and then stay up all night reading it.  I was crazy for the movies... it was always a family event.  For some reason my family was always on vacation together when the movies came out as well, so that made them extra special.

After all those years of love for the movies, I never picked up the books.  Never, until my whole family went to watch Part 1 of The Deathly Hallows.  We were all talking about it in the car, and my mom is notoriously psychic when it comes to movie, plots, shows, bad decisions, life, room mates, relationships..... anything, literally if she says something is a bad idea and I think it's an amazing idea, I am really hard pressed to not listen because she is always right ALWAYS.  Anyways I stray, we were all asking questions guessing what would happen in part 2.  My brother with a smile says "No." to all of our questions related to what would lie ahead for Hogwarts.  Finally my mom asks the question you know the question of questions when it comes to Harry Potter... all I can say is it has to do with the Horcruxes.  My brother blinks twice, and comes out with a "no....".  I halted all conversation and practically freaked out.  Ha.  For about 2 weeks I begged my brother to tell me what was going to happen under the guise that "I wanted someone I loved to tell me the ending, before anyone else let it slip out".  He adamantly refused and told me I had to read the books.  I read all 8 of those books in less than 2 weeks hahhahaa.  I was able to watch The Deathly Hallows Part 2 as a real Harry Potter fan and it was beyond amazing.

To this day and for the last 5 years, if I am at home, I fall asleep to a Harry Potter movie.  This started when I didn't have cable, but liked the t.v on while falling asleep.   I change them out ever so often, usually each one stays in for 3-9 months and I start it over every night.  Point is, if you too like falling asleep to t.v pick something that you love.  It is also especially nice to not have to wake up for commercials, or wonder if you are missing a key element of the t.v show or new movie that you have to return in the morning.

What is your repeat offender movie?  When do you play it ?  How often do you watch it?  I would have to say that collectively I have watched Harry Potter close to 3,000 times, and probably seen the beginning credits close to 7,000 since I can never fall asleep, and inevitably restart them 2-3 times a night.  Ha rereading this, I am aware how utterly insane I may seem, but really it's all about comfort.

In case you are wondering I am currently tuned into The Chamber of Secrets, and the question that my mom asked my brother.... well she was 100% right.

Perfume: The Story Of a Murder

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I was terrified to read the book when I was in High School. But seeing as I was one of the biggest Nirvana fans ever, it had to be done.

This movie is based on the Book Perfume by Patrick Suskind. If you too were a Nirvana fan and remember the song Scentless Apprentice, Kurt Cobain wrote it about this book. This is the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. He has no scent of his own and after smelling what he thinks is the perfect scent, sets off on a mission to learn how to capture it through what ever means necessary.

Featuring Ben Whishaw, Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman this is one of the most beautifully filmed movies I have ever seen.

Is anyone else into "character" driven movies? Not sure how to explain it... but I don't consider it fantasy ... I just like movies that take place in a different time, with different clothing and costumes.  I am not sure what that's really called ha.

Do yourself an eye opening favor and watch this movie. You will be amazed by your heightened senses when you are done.

Jeff Who Lives at Home

I was a bit apprehensive about this movie.  For some reason despite loving The Rocky Horror Picture Show with every fiber of my being, I am not a fan of Susan Sarandon.  I can't explain why but I avoid her.  Maybe it's so I don't taint her image as Janet Weiss.  I stray.

It took a wonderful friend whose opinion I trust implicitly to get me to walk 1/2 a block to the Red Box and pick this little gem up.  It's a story about a man who seems to be drifting through life looking for meaning in all the wrong places.  He's waiting for something to happen and when he gets to life's destinations there is nothing there.  This is a feel good movie about where life takes you and why.  I would recommend it for sure.  Especially true if you too try to read cracks in the wall.  Did you know you can rent movies from Amazon? I didn't.

The Intouchables

This is a bit of a first and a bit of a suggestion. If you like foreign movies even a little bit, you have to see The Intouchables. The basic story is that a quadriplegic lost his zest for life. Everything is mundane until he hires a new nurse who opens his eyes to life's possibilities again. It is full of humor and actually focuses very little on the obvious fact that one of the friends can not get out of a wheel chair. Uplifting and incredibly eye opening this is actually based on a true story.  I got to see this with my whole family.  My dad and I were the only ones that had to read the subtitles though.  This is definitely now on my top 10 for all time favorite foreign movies.  Does it bother you read subtitles?  What are your favorite foreign films?

Midnight Meat Train

Proof this isn't porn link   imdb link
Clive Barker's Midnight Meat Train ... hmm. Bradley Cooper was awesome. Can't say I was expecting this movie at all. Not gonna give a thing away either. Not for the squeamish that's for sure. In order to watch scary movies and be able to sleep at night I have to separate myself from the movie. In the case of this movie I will be able to sleep because I don't ride a subway that goes underground. Do you have any tricks to keep yourself from getting scared? At least the home made popcorn kept me safe. So much better than packaged! And, yes I love the burnt bits and I did it on purpose. Now to turn the lights off and keep eating the popcorn .... because I couldn't eat it during the movie. Ha. This movie is currently free on Ondemand, try it if you dare and let me know what you think.
